A cigarette filter making machine forms filter tow into a continuous filter rod, wraps it in plug wrap paper, and cuts it to length, producing the filter component that gets joined to the tobacco rod on the cigarette maker. This is a separate process from cigarette manufacturing itself. A filter making machine never touches tobacco. It produces the filter that a machine like a Molins Mark 8 Post 64 or Mark 9.5 later attaches during cigarette production.
Filter rod production starts with cellulose acetate tow, a fine, fibrous material that gets opened, bulked, and combined with a plasticizer to help the fibers bond together. That treated tow is then formed into a continuous rod shape and wrapped in plug wrap paper for structure, before being cut into filter rod lengths ready for use on a cigarette maker.
Machines like the KDF-1 and KDF-2 handle this entire process as a single production line, while the Molins PM-5 is built specifically for high-capacity filter rod output on established Molins-based factory setups.

If you’re producing King Size, Slim, or Super Slim cigarettes, confirm the filter machine’s circumference and length range actually covers your target format before choosing between models, since a mismatch here means the finished filter won’t fit the rod it’s meant to attach to.
Not every filter is a solid rod of tow from end to end. A hollow tube filter uses a paper tube section, sometimes combined with tow, to build a different kind of filter structure, one increasingly used in modern filter designs that call for a hollow or specialty tube section rather than a fully solid plug.
The KDF-1, KDF-2, and PM-5 are built for conventional, tow-based filter rod production. Our Hollow Tube Maker is a separate, purpose-built machine for producing these paper tube sections, running at up to 2,100 cigarettes per minute with a rod speed range of 140 to 175 meters per minute. If your filter designs rely on hollow tube sections rather than standard solid filter rod, this is a distinct piece of equipment from the conventional filter makers in our range, not an alternative configuration of the same machine.
A filter making machine needs to keep pace with the cigarette maker it’s feeding, or it becomes the bottleneck in an otherwise well-specified line. The Molins PM-5, for instance, produces up to 4,000 filters per minute, which comfortably supports mid-range makers like the Molins Mark 8 Post 64, but is worth checking carefully against higher-speed makers like the Mark 9.5 range or Protos 70 and 80 ER, which run at considerably higher cigarette-per-minute rates. Before finalizing a line, confirm your filter output and your maker’s rated speed are genuinely compatible, not just similar in scale.
